Call for entries: Electrohype 2010
– the sixth biennial for computer based and technological art

Electrohype is proud to announce that we are celebrating ten years as an organization and at the same time organizing the sixth biennial for computer based and technological art. This year the exhibition will be shown in Ystads Art Museum (Ystads konstmuseum) a well renowned art museum located 60 km south of Malmo. The city of Ystad is located close to the sea and at the same time part of the scenic south Swedish countryside. The art museum has a long tradition of combining traditional art, from its collections, with experimental art and music from the contemporary art scene, both local and international.
This year’s biennial will be shown on a smaller exhibition surface than the previous biennial in 2008, we will therefore focus on smaller installations and objects. So please keep in mind that we do not have space for installations requiring large floor space.
The exhibition will be presented in the art museums main gallery but there will also be a possibility to integrate smaller works in the galleries housing the museum collection.
Electrohype 2010 will be the sixth biennial for computer based and technological art in Sweden. The biennial is also the largest reoccurring event for electronic art in the Nordic region. The previous Electrohype exhibitions in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008 was shown in Malmö and Lund.
The 2010 biennial will present works by 8 – 10 artists or artist groups. To give the exhibition a good and broad perspective we are looking for both Nordic and International artists.

What kind of art are we looking for?
Since the start in 1999 Electrohype has focused on what we choose to call computer based art. Art that runs of computers and utilizes the capacity of the computer to mix various media, allow interaction with people or interaction with other machines. In this context computers can be defined as anything from complex electronics to primitive mechanics. We recommend you to browse our website to see documentation of works in previous exhibitions but we also want you to keep an open mind and feel free to propose works within a wide definition of the term computer based and technological art.
We are not looking for “straight” video art (even if it is edited on a computer) or still images rendered on computers and other material that refers to more “traditional” media forms. Forms where the traditional tools have been replaced with computers and software, in other words art that can be transferred to “traditional” linear media. This might seem as a narrow approach but we have discovered that it gives us a better focus on a genre that in no way is narrow.
Curators: The exhibition will be curated by Anna Kindvall and Lars Gustav Midbøe. Reference group for the selection process are the board members of Electrohype.
Practical information:
You can submit your proposal by filling out our PDF form and send it via e-mail or ordinary mail, or you can use our on-line form.
Do not send material, documentation or similar, as attachments via e-mail. Put your material on-line and put the download URL or FTP address in the application form.
Large, bulky or physical material can be sent via ordinary mail on CD, DVD or on paper.
Do not send 8 pages CVs. Please follow the application form. If we need additional information we will contact you after the first evaluation round.
Please respect these guidelines. We receive large amounts of material and we are reviewing all proposals thoroughly, therefore the importance of concise information.
Financial conditions:
Electrohype covers transport and technical expenses for works accepted for the exhibition, this is of course within reasonable limits and it is important that the financial conditions are clear during the whole process. There will also be an artist honorarium for the participating artist as well coverage for travel and hotel.
Electrohype does not support development and production of unfinished artworks.
In previous exhibitions we have managed to keep a high level in artistic content and exhibition design, even on a relatively modest budget. It is therefore very important for us to avoid “unpleasant surprises”, therefore information in the application form has to be correct for us to make a financial estimate on each artwork, especially equipment requirements, transport weight and other relevant information.
We will also encourage artists applying to be in the exhibition to investigate the possibilities to obtain local funding to cover expenses like transport and travel. This is not a requirement but a request. External funding can be very helpful during the process of exhibition planning, especially in situations with heavy transport and technical expenses. Note that external funding does not play a crucial role in the selection process, we are always prioritizing the quality of the artwork itself.
